RECENT NORMAL FAULTING WHERE IT SHOULDN'T BE: THE CAPE FOLD BELT, SOUTH AFRICA
Field mapping in May 2009 revealed that the Kango Fault in South Africa has experienced one latest Pleistocene surface rupture, but only an additional 3-4 ruptures since the beginning of the Miocene (ca. 23 Ma). If recurrence has been uniform over 23 Ma then the average recurrence interval on this fault is ca. 4.5 Ma, which is long even compared with other intraplate faults. In addition, the post-Miocene reactivations are normal faulting, contrasting with almost all other historic intraplate surface ruptures which occur on reverse faults. J.P. McCalpin will give a talk on this enigmatic fault at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America in Portland, Oregon between Oct. 18-21, 2009.
