Crestone Science
Center (CSC) is a nonprofit
institute, incorporated in the State of Colorado,
devoted to furthering science education, applying science to understanding
natural ecosystems, and using scientific methods to solve environmental
problems. Our faculty are professional educators and earth scientists who wish
to share their excitement and experience with interested professionals,
teachers, children and adults, in a fun learning environment. CSC shares space
with GEO-HAZ Consulting in the 4000 square-foot “Lodge” at the base of the
Sangre de Cristo Range (at the end of the yellow arrow in the above photograph;
also see the GEO-HAZ Home Page.
WHAT'S NEW AT CSC
We believe that environmental education must begin outdoors, so we blend our
projects into a mixture of classroom learning, computer exercises, and day- and
overnight field exercises in the Sangre de Cristo mountains (peak elevations
13,000-14,000 ft) and adjacent San Luis Valley (valley floor elevation 8000
ft). From measuring stream flow, to tracing the paths of ancient glaciers, to
measuring sand movement at the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park, our
activities engage the bodies and minds of students in the pristine environment
of alpine Colorado.
Location:
CSC is located in Crestone, Colorado, (pop.
100, elev. 8100 ft) on a 40-acre campus on the eastern margin of the San Luis
Valley of south-central Colorado (50 miles NE of Alamosa, CO.) Many
educational, philanthropic, and religious groups maintain conference centers
and retreats in this "magic" high valley setting. How To Get Here
Faculty:
The Director of CSC is Dr. James P. McCalpin (Ph.D., Colo.
School of Mines, 1981), a University professor of Geology (Utah
State University)
and head (1991-present) of GEO-HAZ Consulting, Inc. Other faculty include
professional geologists, and local elementary and secondary school educators
(in biology, wildlife, and ecosystems) who have performed field work in the San
Luis Valley.
We offer science and nature education for adults and
children (junior high to high school age), emphasizing the interactions between
the physical and biological world, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of
the environment. For the 2005 course offerings, see 2008
Curriculum.
To see photographs from previous courses, see 2001 Field Course , 2002 Field
Course, 2003 Field Course (Crestone), and 2004 Field Course.
